Welcome to Protect the Patch, a grassroots initiative dedicated to supporting Oregon’s pumpkin patches and cherished agritourism events. The goal of this campaign is to safeguard these beloved traditions and support the hardworking farmers who bring them to life.
Oregon's land use laws impose strict limitations on how farmers can use their land. Unlike other businesses, farmers who host agritourism activities through their farmstands are subject to limitations on the amount of income they can generate. Because of this law, ticket sales from corn mazes, hayrides, or other promotional activities cannot exceed 25% of the farm stand's traditional crop sales.
Do you know of any other business in Oregon that is limited in how much money it can earn? We sure don't. While this law was intended to protect farmland, it has turned into a major threat to many family farms. In years when traditional crop sales are slow, income from agritourism activities may be what keeps the family farm in business. Why should it be capped at 25%?
By removing this income limitation, we can support our local farm families and ensure that agritourism remains a vibrant and sustainable part of Oregon’s agricultural landscape.
